About Us

Kaizen Culture is an inclusive karate community committed to continuous self-improvement. We firmly believe in the power of information and visualisation to help athletes at all levels succeed in sports karate. We are a dependable resource for clubs, parents, and athletes alike; bringing the world of national and international karate to the local level.

"Knowing what you can achieve, and how you can achieve it, unlocks a passion like no other."

- Mitchell Durham

We embrace the Kaizen philosophy of taking continuous, incremental steps towards our future. This is a philosophy we feel is valuable for every member of the karate community and we aim to produce content that promotes this method of self-progression. For any athlete, whether it’s watching past competitions to learn from the world’s best or connecting with like-minded members of the karate community, every effort puts them closer to achieving their goals.

Karate will always hold a special place in our hearts as a traditional practice. The competitive side of the sport builds upon the foundation of the traditional art's technical and philosophical aspects and allows practitioners to achieve personal growth and push themselves to reach new levels of excellence. This provides individuals with a unique and invaluable experience that can flourish in a rich Australian karate culture.

Our Story

Kaizen Culture was founded in 2023 by Mitchell Durham, Jonathan Staynor, and Nathan Blockley to address a gap in the Australian Karate community. Nathan recognised that aspiring athletes lacked awareness of potential pathways and opportunities in sports karate, and that there was limited information available to support and inspire them to embark on such competitive journeys. Drawing on their shared 25+ years of experience, Nathan approached Mitchell with the idea of creating an organisation that would empower and inspire the next generation of Australian karate athletes.

After recruiting Jonathan, the team established Kaizen Culture as a non-profit organisation committed to working collaboratively with clubs and associations in order to provide athletes with the best opportunities to achieve their potential. To come up with a name that encapsulated everything they wanted to contribute proved difficult in the early days of the venture. However, after reading the autobiography of mixed martial arts hall-of-famer George St. Pierre, Nathan loaned the book to Mitchell, where he marked out a page outlining the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. The Kaizen philosophy, which translates to "continuous improvement", defined how St. Pierre approached training and life on his journey to become the best fighter in the world. This immediately resonated with Mitchell and aligned with how he has approached his own competitive career. He saw an opportunity to centre their mission around continuous learning and improvement to create a long-lasting culture within the Australian karate community.

Thus, Kaizen Culture was born.

Meet the Team

Nathan Blockley

Throughout my competitive career, I was given more than just an opportunity to travel the world - karate has given me lifelong friends and a second family. With karate being bigger and more connected than it ever has been before, the opportunities to pursue a career travelling the world and challenging yourself are bigger too. I want to show the next wave of young athletes what is possible when pursuing the competitive dream.

I very quickly fell in love with the competitive side of sports karate and knew this was something I wanted to succeed in from a young age. With an amazing support network around me, I followed my passion, leading me down a path I am forever grateful for. Seeing how this sport has significantly impacted my life motivates me to shed light on the sport and hopefully provide a similar, if not better, opportunity for future generations.

Karate has been a constant in my life for over 25 years and has been a foundation for my self-development and achievements. Some of my best memories have come from my involvement in competition karate as a competitor and more recently a coach. It brings me great joy to provide the opportunities I had and new inspiration to young and upcoming karateka.
